  11. REGISTERING GETINFO AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
  12. =============================================
  13. GetInfo is not free. This utility must be registered just as you would buy
  14. commercial software. So please send a few dollars if you use this program.
  15. Or you can consider the following.
  16.  
  17. 7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
  18. I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
  19. I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
  20. register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
  21. an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
  22. deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
  23. like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.

  26. on the 7.0 PLUS Utilities. A registration form should also accompany this file.

  29. USING GETINFO
  30. ==============
  31. •  If you use GetInfo, please please please send me a note. My addresses

  33.     information in the above section on registration.

  35. What Does GetInfo Do?
  36. --------------------
  37. •  GetInfo, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Rob-Box), lets you view and change
  38.     file info for selected items. You can modify the name type, creator, finder
  39.     flags, and locked bit of items just by dragging them over the application
  40.     icon, or through a standard get file dialog. GetInfo requires System 7.
  41.  
  42. Using GetInfo
  43. ------------
  44. •  Drag items (files and/or folders) to be modified over GetInfo’s icon, just
  45.     as you would drag those items into a folder. GetInfo will then show the
  46.     information for that item, allowing you to edit the modifiable attributes.
  47.  
  48. •  Double-click on GetInfo to see the about box information. You can also
  49.     modify files in manual mode by double-clicking on the icon and selecting
  50.     Get info from the File menu.
  51.  
  52. •  Since the Finder resolves all aliases when you drop them into a Drop Box,
  53.     GetInfo can only think that you dropped the target (not the alias)
  54.     in to be modified. So when you get info on an alias, you are really getting
  55.     the info on the target.
  56.  
  57. File Information
  58. ---------------
  59. •  If you have a color monitor, click on the file’s icon to select what depth and size of
  60.     icon you wish to view.
  61.  
  62. •  As you modify the file type and creator, the icon and file owner information
  63.     change accordingly, so you can see what effect your changes will have on the
  64.     files. For this reason purposely does not show the custom icons for files.
  65.     Besides, you can see the custom icon for a file in the Finder, anyway.
  66.  
  67. •  Choose the Same As... button to get info on a specific file. The File Settings
  68.     will be set up to reflect those of the chosen file.
  69.  
  70. •  You cannot modify the type and creator of folders or disks.
  71.  
  72. •  The Finder flags are self-explanatory. If you don’t know what they do, you
  73.     probably shouldn’t use them. Hold down the option key before the window
  74.     opens, or click on the zoom box to hide the finder flags.
  75.  
  76. •  The Finder is a bit eccentric about modifying some bits. It may not test the
  77.     bits until the next time the Finder is launched, so don’t worry if you set, say,
  78.     the Stationery bit, and nothing happens.
  79.  
  80. USING DROP BOXES
  81. =================
  82. Drop Boxes are applications (drag-and-drop utilities) which can take advantage
  83. of System 7.0’s Apple Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application
  84. icon just as you would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory.
  85. The Drop Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits.
  86. You can also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in
  87. just one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
  88. combination of the three, and dump them in. Any aliases dropped directly into
  89. a Drop Box (not inside a directory) are resolved by the Finder and thus their
  90. target (parent) is modified.
